Advanced EMT or Paramedic

• Performs within the limits of the employee’s certification and licensure as either a firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician, until he/she satisfies all requirements for recognition as a Firefighter – EMT (FD/11) or Firefighter – Paramedic (FD/10) with the City of Peachtree City. Functions may include
• Responds to fire alarms and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to most efficiently control the emergency at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.
• Responds to medical emergencies and uses EMS skills to evaluate, treat, stabilize and transport patients to the appropriate medical facility as allowed by Georgia’s scope of practice and department protocols.
• Responds to natural and man-made disasters; participates in emergency response activities.
• Completes required reports detailing fire and medical incident responses.
• Drives and operates firefighting and EMS vehicles, apparatus and equipment as assigned.
• Completes required training and maintains required certifications.
• Inspects equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis; repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment; ensures the proper functioning of all emergency medical equipment and vehicles.
• Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies aboard emergency vehicles; conducts regular inspections.
• Provides fire prevention information to the public; assists in teaching fire safety and CPR classes; provides tours of the fire station.
• Performs housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties.
• Performs inspections and pre-incident planning for City businesses.
• Completes fire hydrant and hose inspections and testing.  
• Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledgeable, within the limits of the employee’s certification and licensure, as either a firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician, until he/she satisfies all requirements for recognition as a Firefighter – EMT (FD/11) or Firefighter – Paramedic (FD/10) with the City of Peachtree City. • Knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and in rescue/EMS work.

• Knowledge of algebra, pharmacology, and chemistry.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials.
• Skill in the operation of all firefighting, rescue and EMS equipment, including motor vehicles.

• Skill in the use of a computer.
• Skill in the use of radios and communication equipment.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

• The Fire Lieutenant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. While engaged in formal training programs, works under the general supervision of the program instructor or clinical preceptor.

GUIDELINES

• Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, City ordinances and policies, fire rescue and EMS protocols, NFPA standards, the Life Safety Code, and the International Fire Code. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of gaining cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to engage in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical service duties.
• Based on certification and licensure, the work consists of related fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical service duties. The variety of emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.
• The purpose of this position is to prepare to protect lives and property through fire prevention and suppression activities and provision of emergency medical services. Successful performance helps ensure the safety of lives and property in the community. 

   CONTACTS                                              

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, representatives of other fire departments, training program hosts and instructors, hospital staff, clinical preceptors, representatives of state and federal agencies, vendors, local business owners, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and educate the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office or classroom, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

• None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
• Possession of valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification.
• Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.  
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association, the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act, as well as all Georgia Department of Public Health Office of EMS and Trauma Regulations.
• Selected candidates must attain State of Georgia licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced or Paramedic within the first 18 months of employment.
• Selected candidates must attain Georgia/ProBoard Firefighter I & II Certifications and Hazmat Awareness/Operations Certification within the first 18 months of employment.
